Learning Objectives | Back to top
Upon completion of this learning material, physicians should be able to:
- Assess the safety and activity of novel chemotherapy combinations in advanced NSCLC
- Compare the safety profiles and outcomes of pemetrexed with that of docetaxel in second-line therapy of advanced NSCLC
- Describe the technologies used to study protein expression patterns
in tumor tissue
Activity Goals | Back to top
Lung cancer remains the single largest cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. Most of the approximately 175,000 patients estimated to be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2004 will be diagnosed at an advanced stage. It is agreed that a platinum-containing doublet can extend survival and improve quality of life for these patients. However, in advanced stages, lung cancer is rarely cured, and survival time is generally < 1 year. Combinations including the third-generation platinum oxaliplatin and antimetabolite-containing regimens might provide additional treatment options for patients with relapsed/refractory non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
In addition to searching for better therapies, research is also ongoing using gene and protein expression profiling to lead to a better understanding of lung cancer biology. These advances could in turn result in better prognostic factors and, ultimately, the individualizing of therapy.
The purpose of this activity is to update physicians on ongoing research in both the biology and treatment of lung cancer.
