Interactive Case Study: A Patient With Newly Diagnosed Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in Chronic Phase January 2008 Release date: January 28, 2008

| Overview and Purpose | |||||||
Imatinib is the current standard of care for the first-line treatment of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Although imatinib yields high response rates, there is a high rate of relapse, and some patients with advanced stages of the disease develop resistance to imatinib. Studies have identified mutations in the Bcr-Abl tyrosine kinase (TK) domain that are responsible for resistance to imatinib, leading to the development of newer agents that might overcome this resistance. Several novel TK inhibitors have recently gained US Food and Drug Administration approval for the treatment of imatinib-resistant or -intolerant CML. The purpose of this activity is to update physicians on the current issues in the treatment of CML and apprise them of the current recommendations for the optimal monitoring and management of CML. |
