| Overview and Purpose | ||||
Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a particularly aggressive form of the disease that overexpresses the ErbB2 receptor approximately twice as often as noninflammatory breast tumors. Antibody-based therapies and small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors that target dysregulated ErbB signaling have demonstrated significant clinical benefit for patients with ErbB2+ breast cancer. Ongoing studies are investigating ErbB2-targeted agents in tumors with specific pathologic characteristics such as IBC and in patients who have progressed on ErbB2-targeted therapy. The continued development and optimization of drugs that target ErbB2-mediated signaling will involve evaluation of their efficacy and safety in particular patient populations, such as those with IBC or central nervous system metastases. The purpose of this activity is to update physicians on the latest data on the use of ErbB2-targeted agents in the treatment of patients with ErbB2+ metastatic IBC. |
