Learning Objectives | Back to top
Upon completion of this learning material, physicians should be able to:

  • Evaluate the safety of an antiangiogenic monoclonal antibody in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer
  • Describe the role of the VEGF pathway in the development of
    colorectal cancer
  • Discuss the clinical trials that are evaluating the use of an
antiangiogenic monoclonal antibody in pancreatic cancer

Activity Goals | Back to top
Tumor growth and metastasis is highly dependent on the ability of the tumor to promote the development of its own blood supply. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a critical induction signal for angiogenesis in the embryo and in tumors; however, the survival of endothelial cells in mature vasculature is not VEGF dependent. Thus, VEGF represents an attractive molecular target for cancer therapy because disruption of VEGF signaling might prevent tumor-stimulated neovascularization without compromising the function of the existing vasculature. Anti-VEGF antibodies are currently approved for use in combination with chemotherapy in colorectal cancer, but antiangiogenic strategies might synergize with standard chemotherapy regimens and produce improved outcomes for patients with other tumor types.

The purpose of this activity is to update physicians on advances with VEGF- and VEGF receptor-targeted agents.

Target Audience | Back to top
This publication is intended for medical oncologists involved in the care of patients with solid tumors. No specific skills or knowledge other than a basic training in oncology are required for successful participation in this activity.
